Abstract :
Hitler's dream of reconstructing the cultural history of Europe around a supermuseum of Germanic art resulted in the ruthless rampage and shunting around Europe of art collections, first to the repositories of the elite of the Third Reich, then as these were threatened by the advancing Allies, to safe underground caverns in salt mines, there narrowly saved from Hitler's own 'scorched earth' command, snatched from incorporation into the Russian zone, and again removed, this time by the Allies, and held secure at Central Collecting Points until restitution prodecures could be agreed and the painstaking task of unscrambling the confusion, identifying the works and restitution could begin. ;
