Abstract :
Explores hitherto unremarked Anglo-Indian cross-currents in Brown's paintings. His decision to make sense of the conclusion of the Third Mysore War by conflating it with late-medieval English prototypes, in order to create imaginative constructions of distant colonial events, demonstrates a willingness to treat physical and historical distance as synonymous. Delving into the national past to find analogies to justify Britain's imperial project, Brown compared the plight of the Little Princes in the Tower with that of the young sons of Tipu Sultan whom the British held hostage until the Indian leader bowed to their terms following his defeat in the Third Mysore War. However, the tenor of these particular transcultural associations suggests their creator was troubed by the conquest of Tipu's domain and turned to familiar historical paradigms to cast it in an acceptable light. ;
