Abstract :
Studies the early career of John Singleton Copley, focusing on his cultural milieu and biography and its interpretation by recent scholars. Pays particular attention to his Portrait of Mary Turner Sargent (1763; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco), asking by what means its realistic look is achieved, how it prompts the viewers' responses, what elements of Boston 18th-c. culture are coded within its forms, and which of its elements respond to the time's expectations about art. Turns to issues of sitter biography, costume, gesture, setting, and a nexus of works closely related to the San Francisco portrait. ;
