Abstract :
Studies the evolution and use of highly realistic polychromed wood sculpture in Holy Week processions by lay confraternities in Seville in the 16th and 17th cs. Through an examination of the artistic, religious, social, cultural and political contexts in which these sculptures were made and used, provides a new perspective on popular religious devotion in Golden-Age Spain. Chapters deal with the penitential confraternities that were the patrons of these works, the sculptures themselves, the costumes and scenography and associated rituals of Holy Week processions, and the intense emotional response of the public to the sculptures. Appendices provide information on the artists of these processional images, the inventory of the Confraternity of Montserrat, 1701, and the processional order of confraternities in the 16th and 17th cs. ;
