Pius II and his loggia in Siena

Abstract :
The Loggia del Papa, commissioned by Pius II and built 1460-1462, has generally been assumed to have been designed by Antonio Federighi. The author concurs that Federighi oversaw its construction, but suggests that it was more likely designed by Rossellino, Alberti's protegé. Also considers the multi-layered symbolism of the structure. Jenkens writes '..it was intended both as an elegant and cultured signpost pointing to the triumphal return, political and economic, of the Piccolomini and as a memorial to Pius who had restored his family to prominence in Siena'. ;
