Abstract :
A biographical account of Belanger is followed by five chapters dedicated to different themes in his career as an architect : his work as a domestic architect for private patrons; his career as a speculator and designer of 'series' housing; his practice as a garden designer and promoter of the picturesque garden in France; his involvement in new technology culminating in the construction of the world's first iron dome covering the Halle au Blé in Paris; and lastly, his work as a designer of court festivals and ceremonies for the restored Bourbon monarchy. Particular heed is paid to English influence upon Belanger's oeuvre. He was unusual among architects of his generation for having travelled to England when the preferred destination was Rome. ;
