Abstract :
The Rampjaar, the Disaster Year of 1672, when Louis XIV in alliance with England, Cologne and Münster attacked the Dutch Republic in overwhelming force, has frequently been viewed as a short-term political and economic crisis, the disruption and turmoil of which were quickly forgotten after the retreat of the French in 1674. This article focuses on the cultural aspects of this crisis as reflected in the poetry, pamphlet propaganda, including popular dialogues, and the art market, and suggests that the emotional, psychological and moral jolt, and the cultural effects of the temporary economic dislocation the Rampjaar inflicted on the Netherlanders, ran deeper, and lingered longer, than the country's outward recovery and the claims of chroniclers imply. ;
