Abstract :
The British Museum and the British Library, London between them house one of the world's most important collections of drawings, manuscripts and sculptural models by or associated with Michelangelo. The greater part of these collections were acquired by the British Museum in 1859, directly from the Buonarroti family collections preserved in Florence, and just before the opening of the Casa Buonarroti as a public museum in its own right. The story of this acquisition throws light on the Anglo-Italian art world, and touches on complex issues of nationalism and cultural property in the period leading up to the founding of the modern Italian state.
