Abstract :
Looks at bindings on some 12th c. books to see what they might reveal about book production and book use at Bury S. Edmunds. In the first part of the 12th c. the bindings surveyed suggest an organized and closely controlled system of production, whereas books copied and bound in the second half of the 12th c. present a rather different picture. Many of these latter books show evidence of a later medieval campaign of repair and modernization, possibly undertaken by Henry de Kirkstede during his period as custodian of Bury's books. ;
