Abstract :
Considers the medieval and early modern development of bell-casting, particularly in the light of the archaeological evidence which has been steadily accumulating over the last 30 years, in the form of pits for the casting of bells, or the fragments of clay bell-moulds or metal spillage. Mainly, this has come from excavation of the churches in which the bells were to hang or areas adjacent to them. Examines the evidence from Nottinghamshire, since especially from the 15th to the 17th c. Nottingham was a well-documented centre of bell-founding. ;
