Abstract :
Considers Richard II's inheritance and acquisitions, whether by purchase or by special commission or as gifts, by looking at documentary and physical evidence. Considers what survives of his collections, who the makers were, how he chose what to commission or buy, how his collections compare with those of his predecessor or successor, and how they rate in a European context. Although London goldsmiths predominate, Richard's suppliers were international. The majority of the surviving metal objects associated with Richard are assumed to have been his by virtue of the presence on them of his arms, his name, or the badge of the White Hart with a gold crown and chain around its neck. A postscript draws attention to a hitherto unpublished inventory of Richard's goldsmiths' work, compiled in 1398, which documents the accumulation of wealth for which Richard drew the critical comment of his contemporaries. ;
