Abstract :
Because the Wenceslas Bible has been dated after the second marriage of Wenceslas in 1389, the tale of epic chivalry known as the Willehalm has generally been considered the first manuscript from the Wenceslas group (Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, MS 2759-2767 Wenceslas Bible, MS ser. nov. 2643 Willehalm). Suggests that work on the Bible started ten years earlier than has hitherto been accepted, at the end of the 1370s or ca.1380, just before the departure of Wenceslas's sister, Anne, for England. Submits that the queen mentioned and depicted in the prologue of the Bible is Wenceslas's first wife, Johanna, and that work on the Bible began during her lifetime and perhaps continued after her death in 1386. Examines the heraldic evidence for dating, and interpretation of enigmatic marginal decorations. Argues that the emblems in the margin are based on the iconography of the days of Creation, the Hexaemeron, and that the manuscript of the Bible is the first book in which they are depicted together. ;
