Abstract :
Investigates the iconography of the 14th c. fresco cycle by Guariento in the chancel of the Eremitani in Padua. (More than half of the paintings were destroyed by bombing in 1944). The Christian iconography features four depictions of S. Augustine, including his conversion, the saint's consignment of his Rule to a group of hermits, and the unification of the order. Bourdua concludes that the four Augustinian frescoes of the Eremitani reflect the interests of the Order of the Hermits of S. Augustine during the 14th c., in particular their claim that they were the true and proper sons of S. Augustine. Guariento alone, or with advisors, made extensive use of both Augustine's Confessions and the anonymous Initium sive processus Ordinis heremitarum sancti Augustini, as well as the works of Nicolas of Alessandria and Henry of Friemar. ;
