Abstract :
The systematic survey of Çanli Kilise was begun in 1994. Findings during 1995-1996 revealed that the site was a town, rather than a monastic center as was previously surmised. The surveying concentrated on the organization of the settlement and the detailed examination of its individual elements. Ousterhout writes 'the area, so rich in physical remains, should be seen as an untapped resource for the study of domestic architecture, urban and regional planning, and settlement patterns during the middle Byzantine period.' About 25 large, rock-cut living units, as well as dozens of smaller, simpler ones have been located. About 30 churches and chapels (rock-cut and masonry) have been identified in and around the settlement. ;
