Abstract :
Reconstructs the history of the Early Christian church of S. Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome. The church was constructed during rebuilding campaigns of the 4th and 5th cs. within a 3rd c. hall (the Sessorianum) which was part of a suburban villa. Reexamines the traditional association of S. Helena with the church and its relics of the True Cross, noting that an unambiguous connection of the Helena legend with the Roman church of the Cross is not achieved before the late Middle Ages. The Liber Pontificalis text on S. Croce offers valuable evidence on the setting of a Cross relic in a church interior of the 4th c. Blaauw summarizes, 'the Sessorian basilica functioned as a memoria of the Cross and the place where this had stood, as an equivalent to the famous local martyria. But the relic which was its raison d'être was not granted a long life. After the disappearance of the Cross relic, the church lost its meaning...Notwithstanding its pitiful fate, the church in the Sessorianum set the tone for the cult of the Cross and Jerusalem in medieval Rome'. ;
