Abstract :
Presents an account of excavations undertaken during 1979 and 1980 and archaeological findings. Evidence shows that the lower room of the tower was constructed by ca.1250 or earlier. This confirms it to be a primary castle fortification. There is little doubt that together with the north-west keep tower, which still retains its 13th c. gallery, the two towers formed outriders to the donjon or original keep. As a guard tower, the lower room gave shelter to those of the garrison stationed at the wall. The first four floors belong to this period. The fourth floor revealed pottery of late 14th to early 15th c. date. The next three floors were of mid to late 15th c. Food debris and pottery were found. The transformation of the guard room into a chamber occurred between 1470 and 1510. In the later 16th c. it was again adapted for defence. Finds include pottery, metal weapons, metalwork, 15th c. window glass fragments and faunal remains. ;
