Abstract :
Offers a summary of the information available for dating the structure of the Romanesque church and a brief account of its architectural sources. Examines the evidence for the planning and layout of the building, paying particular attention to its irregularities. Submits that the church was enlarged in both width and length at the east side of the crossing, and that this was done, shortly after the translation in 1095, in order to make Bury substantially larger than the rival church at Norwich begun in 1096 and built on lines very similar to those already established in the eastern arm of Bury. Proposes that the same type of geometrical system was used in the setting out of the town as that used for the church. ;
