Abstract :
The choir and presbytery of Southwell Minster were clearly built up against a Romanesque choir that was still standing in the early 13th c. There are a number of anomalies in the building which demonstrate that the construction of the new work was interrupted when the old choir was taken down. There are also smaller discrepancies in the fabric that reveal problems in construction. An analysis of the marks made by the stonemasons who cut the regular blocks of stone for the walling, piers and mouldings reveals the sequence of construction of the east end and provides evidence for the relative length of time represented by the building breaks. The relationship between the north transept chapel and the new choir is also established. ;
