Abstract :
Research on castles and palaces first described its objects during the mid 19th c. to the mid 20th c., but began to develop ideas of a typology relatively late in the 1960s and 1970s. A consequently systematical typology can only be a matter of a sophisticated general inventory and should remain mostly abstract which means it should at first do without concrete examples. After a brief review of all available titles published on the subject the author comes to a typology carrying six equalized data-fields which are capable of covering all aspects of the respective object: types of geographical location, of topography, of ground-plan, formal types, types of historical as well as of juridical function. These together are mandatory in any inventory which claims to be complete. Depending on what is to be further derived in any application, as scientific reviews or touristic surveys etc., can thus be fully drawn from such a database which ideally is fully computerized. ;
