Abstract :
Traces the transformation of museums in America, 1876 to 1926, from their position at the center American intellectual life (at the time when knowledge was seen as residing in objects - an 'object-based epistemology') to a more peripheral role as research-oriented universities took the leading role as places where knowledge was produced. Discusses natural history, history, ethnographic, and commercial museums, as well as art museums (focusing on the Philadelphia Museum of Art and New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art) and expositions. ;
