Abstract :
Feminist exploration of contemporary artists, filmmakers, and writers who could be categorized as bad girls and sick boys. These individuals create very literal art, often sexual or violent in content, which is too visceral for pornography but is often characterized by savage satire and radical material metaphor. Kauffman writes in her introduction '...the artists in this book serve as interpreters of this brave new world, for by seizing these new technologies to radicalize artistic practices, they challenge society's most cherished assumptions about the body's integrity and rectitude.' Part 1 is devoted to performance and performance art (including the works of Bob Flanagan, Carolee Schneemann, Annie Sprinkle, and Orlan). Part 2 concerns films and filmmakers and explores why sex and violence have such abiding appeal. Part 3 deals with novelists who have been targets of censorship. ;
