Abstract :
Examines the ways in which Warhol responded to criticism of his work, creating wallpaper (in response to Thomas Hess), painting Rorschach ink blots (in response to Robert Hughes), posing for various of the self-portraits, and appropriating the word 'easy' as a description of his work, among other tactics. Surveys such other artists' responses to criticism as Jasper Johns, Raoul Hausmann, Arthur Dove, and Marcel Duchamp, concluding that Warhol broke down the oppositional stance of critic/artist and thus revealed himself as more engaged and responsive than was commonly thought. ;
