Hilton and Constant in correspondence

Abstract :
Transcribes and comments on nine letters exchanged by Roger Hilton and Constant between March and November 1953. The letters constitute a dialogue on artistic ideas which is characteristic of Constant's international contact-making and sense of his role as an avant-garde catalyst. For Hilton, the correspondence represented a greater challenge to his practice and thinking than he was to experience at any other point in his working life. It helped to produce a fundamental shift in his approach to painting, and clarified his resistance to certain dominant contemporary 'vanguard' assumptions. ;
