Abstract :
Provides a history and analysis of the garden, from its origins in Philip Johnson's design of 1953 through to its latest restructuring by Cesar Pelli in 1984. Articulates the relationship between Johnson's original design, as well as his 1964 renovation, and the architectural and spatial theories of Mies van der Rohe. Criticizes Pelli's alterations for completely destroying the flow of space and the function of the garden as an extension of the museum, where the sculpture collection was sensitively and meaningfully displayed. ;
