Abstract :
This article deals with Bernard Leach's imaging of the traditional Japanese craftsman as a bastion against 'inauthentic' modernity. Drawing on research undertaken both at the Tokyo Mingeikan Archives and the Leach Archive held at the Craft Studies Centre in Bath, it examines the nature of Leach's actual encounters with Japanese craftsmen and his subsequent figuring of them in his writings and pronouncements. It suggests that Leach's knowledge of such craftsmen was closely mediated through his complex relationship with Yanagi Sôetsu. Leach's authority in the West as the interlocutor for the values and ideas of Oriental craftsmen is questioned. ;
