Abstract :
Rau, born in Dresden began his career as a print-maker. He became influential in the introduction and dissemination of the heliograph in Germany after beginning his experiments with the process as an amateur photographer. Early folios he published showed him to have been a pioneer of art photography. He participated with Berlin's photography associations, took part in all the relevant and important exhibitions, and tried to inspire others and let them share his expertise. At the height of his fame as a photographer, he retired to Munich where he lived for 30 years as a landscape painter. ;
