Abstract :
Explores the iconography of Tanner's 1894 painting (New Haven, Yale University Art Gallery), in light of the personal histories of both the artist, an African-American, and his patron and subject, the Methodist Episcopal minister and social reformer G.W. Gray. Discusses the social climate in late 19th c. America for minorities and for the working poor such as Gray and his family, as well as references to President Lincoln in the genre painting-cum-portrait. Argues that the painting 'must be read as a collaborative effort between Gray and Tanner fed by self-reflection and projected outward as a statement of shared values and a common purpose'. ;
