Abstract :
Examines later reproductions of John Singer Sargent's 1890-1919 mural paintings for the Boston Public Library, focusing on the Frieze of Prophets1. Describes the reception of the murals when they were first installed, noting that while Sargent intended the iconography to be understood in a broadly philosophical manner, many viewers gave it a strict religious interpretation. Discusses three cases in later years in which the imagery of the prophets was adapted and reproduced for a variety of uses: for secular educational purposes in the McClain High School art gallery, in Greenfield, Ohio; as a tableau vivant at a YWCA pageant in Richmond, Virginia, in 1913; and as a photographic mural in the Jewish Community Center, Rochester, New York, in the late 1930s. ;
