Abstract :
Considers the commercial functions of the Society's exhibitions, both as a market for goods and as a public entertainment, and looks at how these twin roles helped define the watercolour as a commodity. Also looks at the links between the Society and the entrepreneur Rudolph Ackermann and uses reviews of the Society's exhibitions from Ackermann's publications as the starting point for a broader analysis of the problematic nature of the watercolour as a commodity. Commercial imperatives were seen not only to govern the organization of the Society's exhibitions, but also to determine in some degree the actual form of some of the works on display in a deleterious way. ;
