Title :

Alfred Powell : idealism and realism in the Cotswolds

Author :
SARSBY, Jacqueline ;
Publication year :
1997
Language :
English ;
Abstract :
Shows the social purpose which lay behind Powell's activities in the city and in the countryside, and questions the usefulness and accuracy of the notions of nostalgia and 'rural romanticism' which have been levelled against the South Cotswolds Group of which he was a member. Shows, on the contrary, that Powell's work - in architecture, in the pottery factory, and in his rural studio - was in all contexts imbued with a Christian, liberal idealism, which was also practical, and that there was a remarkable consistency in his ideas and practice. ;
