Abstract :
Discusses the language used in reports by the House of Commons' Select Committee on the Arts and Principles of Design, which sat in 1835 and 1836. The reports reflect anxieties and interests in the promotion of art education, access for designers to collections of models, and an alteration of the terms of trade in fancy goods in favour of the British against their continental rivals. Illuminates the contradictions, ambiguities, and confusions around the very category of 'art', in effect the potency of a whole ideology, that made it formidably difficult for bourgeois radicals to produce a sustained critique of the category or to formulate an effective policy to remedy the obvious deficiencies of aristocratic culture. ;
