Abstract :
Attempts to reconstruct the history of a set of 10, probably Flemish tapestries (now lost) recorded in the collection of the English king upon his death in 1547. Through a study of its provenance through the early 19th c., and a comparison with several other sets, 16th c. and later, as well as recently rediscovered cartoons, that are clearly related to this original series, suggests that the designer of the series was Léonard Thiry, a Flemish artist linked with the designers Bernard van Orley and Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Also attempts to reconstruct the iconographic program of the Henry VIII series as well as the later tapestry sets, and discusses possible reasons for the choice of the history of Julius Caesar by Henry VIII in the second quarter of the 16th c. ;
