Abstract :
From 1873 to 1928, it was supposed by scholars that a factory produced hard paste porcelain at Bristol as early as 1762. This theory was based on the evidence of a bowl inscribed 'Jan: 9 1762' that was associated with the potter Francis Brittan. Bimson concurs with later 20th c. scholars, saying there is no evidence for porcelain production at Bristol ca.1762. She argues, however, that the 1762 bowl (destroyed 1910) and other pieces associated with it were actually soft paste porcelain made at Vauxhall; and that Brittan was employed there. ;
