Abstract :
W.S. de Winton is an almost forgotten collector of 18th c. Continental porcelain, but in 1919 Bernard Rackham described his recent gift to the National Museum of Wales [Cardiff] as 'the best public collection in this Kingdom of Continental porcelain, other than figures.' This lecture discusses the formation of this idiosyncratic collection of some 2000 pieces, which includes wares from nearly every known factory of the period, and assesses de Winton's aim of illustrating the migration of designs between factories. It also re-examines some key areas, especially the Böttger and early Meissen wares and the Dutch porcelains, in the light of current scholarship. Recent discoveries include a Höroldt teapot recorded in the Schulz codex, and a number of unusual Hausmaler pieces. ;
