Abstract :
By the 15th c. the difficult technique of applying metallic lustre to pottery had long been known to Islamic potters, and Hispano-Moresque lustreware was successfully exported throughout Europe. Exactly how, when and where the technique was first transferred to Italy remains controversial. This lecture, in the light of recent archival and archaeological research, examines the evidence for the earliest experiments in Italy and surveys the products of the first successful lustre-producing centres of the Renaissance. ;
