'Her moost lovyng and fryndely brother sendeth gretyng' : Anne Boleyn's manuscripts and their sources

CARLEY, James P. ;

Language :
English ;
Abstract :
Focuses on two of the books owned by Anne Boleyn, both bilingual manuscripts, and both probably given to her as gifts: London, British Library MS Harley 6561, an evangelical text which derives from a printed book, the Epistres et Evangiles des cinquante et deux sepmaines de l'an written by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples and his disciples; and Alnwick Castle, MS Percy 465, the Ecclesiaste, the text of which derives from Lecclesiaste, which was printed by Simon du Bois at Alençon ca.1531. The same scribe executed both manuscripts, and the decoration of the two manuscripts is stylistically similar, although the Harley manuscript is more elaborate. Concludes that Anne's brother George was probably the translator and donor of both. Carley notes that as a whole, the books Anne owned indicated her cultural and religious orientation: France and evangelism. ;
