Abstract :
Two editions of the blockbook are known, both were printed in the Netherlands ca.1465. Considers the relationship of the Canticum canticorum to an older tradition of typological books such as the Bible moralisée, the Biblia pauperum, and the Speculum humanae salvationis. His hypothesis is that the scenes in the Canticum blockbook were not conceived as separate units or as a part of a linear narrative, but that each opening composed of the facing pages of the book operates in a complex, interrelated system. These ensembles of four scenes formed a basic unit which structured the experience of the viewer/reader and, at the same time, through its fluid relationships, provided a unique means for visual exegesis of the Song of Songs. The peculiar format, complex organization, and the subtle visual linking of the scenes suggest that the blockbook elicited an extraordinarily active, highly literate and visually sophisticated response in the historical viewer. It becomes clear that not only a skilled draughtsman was needed for its execution, but also a visually sensitive theologian. ;
