- Abstract :
- Examines four versions of one of the earliest suites - issued ca.1640-1759 - of engraved London Cries (Cambridge, Magdalene College, Pepysian Library; London, British Museum; San Marino, CA, Huntington Library; and London, Guildhall Library). Comparison of the variants allows the author to answer some crucial questions about this suite of popular engravings. Shesgreen names the publishers; shows that all known impressions were pulled from three large copperplates; and defines states for all coppers. He describes definitively the suite's orignal format; reassigns its putative title The Cryes of the City of London to another ensemble; and reveals how certain individual images were originally arranged. Finally, he assesses the formal contribution of The Manner of Crying Things in London to the London Cries as a theme. ;
