Abstract :
Closely analyzes the painting Christ at the Sea of Galilee (Washington, DC, National Gallery of Art), attributed to Tintoretto. (The work was restored and underwent infra-red reflectography, 1993-1995.) is actually a late work (of ca.1580) by the Dutch painter Lambert Sustris, who also painted the two underpaintings (a landscape and a portrait) revealed by the reflectography. Retraces Sustris's career and examines his oeuvre, observing that most problems in reconstructing his activity involve his later period (post 1553). Discusses evidence that Sustris was then working for Tintoretto, and attributes other works previously considered as part of Tintoretto's oeuvre (such as Wise and Foolish Virgins, Upton House, Warwickshire) to Sustris. ;
