Abstract :
Reexamines Giorgione's last period on the basis of Marcantonio's engraving, The Dream, and the lost painting, Inferno with Aeneas and Anchises. Relates the former to 16th c. humanist culture, suggesting that it was produced to challenge the technical and iconographical knowledge of a learned viewer, and to inspire discussion and entertainment. Reconstructs the latter, one of three works of Giorgione recorded by Michiel in the collection of Taddeo Contarini in 1515, arguing that it was the same painting as the Nocte mentioned by Taddeo Albano in 1510, and that Contarini commissioned it. Interprets the iconography - a nocturnal scene with the fall of Troy - in light of the patron's classical interests and political ties to the Republic. Concludes that both works reveal a private aspect of Giorgione's art, 1508-1510: preoccupation with night scenes, special effects of light, and violent fires; identifies Leonardo's writings as the source for his treatment of these themes; and notes its impact on western painting, including the work of Dosso Dossi. ;
