Abstract :
Studies Dosso's use of prints as compositional and iconographic sources; focuses primarily on prints after Central Italian artists, secondarily on those of North Italian and German artists; and concludes that the role of prints in Dosso's creative process was not direct and does not account for his enigmatic imagery; instead, the print sources are embedded in Dosso's own inventions, and he seldom adopts their original content. (Also examines print collections in Northern Italy, the presence of prints in artists' studios, and quotations from prints by Marcantonio in paintings of Moretto da Brescia, Battista Dossi, and Garofalo). ;
