Abstract :
Considers Correggio's early career (1511-1514) in Mantua and his stylistic development, in contrast to that of Dosso Dossi. Cites recently published documentary evidence linking Correggio to Mantegna's son Francesco in 1512, in support of the hypothesis that Correggio belonged to Mantegna's workshop and assisted in the fresco decorations of Mantegna's funerary chapel in S. Andrea, as well as the tondi formerly in the atrium (now in the Museo diocesano). Examines the style of these works; and argues that a Triumph of David in a private collection is one of the lost organ shutters commissioned from Correggio for San Benedetto Po in 1514. Notes in conclusion that it was the impact of Raphael that severed his ties to Mantegna's style and turned him toward Leonardo and Giorgione. Takes note in an appendix of the significance for Dosso's chronology of recently published records of payment dated 1513 for the Costabili polyptych (Ferrara, Pinacoteca nazionale). ;
