Abstract :
Contrasts the style, reception, and careers of Leonbruno and Dosso, beginning with the former's success as a court painter and the latter's obscurity in Mantua in the 1510s; relates the dialectic that set them in opposition - meticulous attention to detail versus the pictorial informality of the maniera moderna - to the contemporary crisis in the system of values of the courtly world. Notes that by the 1520s Isabella d'Este had espoused the modern style and recalled Dosso. Examines early works of Dosso (including a newly attributed), and argues against Franceschini's inference from the documents that the Costabili polyptych (Ferrara, Pinacoteca nazionale) was executed in 1513, proposing that it was not a collaborative work but that Garofalo began it and Dosso transformed and completed it later on. Also reconsiders Leonbruno's chronology and stylistic development, delineating his decline against Dosso's rise and continuous development. ;
