Abstract :
Close examination of tomb monuments and a consideration of workshop practices under which they were created, allow new interpretations of early 16th c. sculpture in Spain. The artistic personality of Domenico Fancelli emerges as more important then previously thought. He was responsible for the design of the first Renaissance tombs in Spain, and was the head of the workshop that dominated such artistic production for a quarter of a century, even if under the subsequent leadership of Ordóñez and the Aprile in the 1520s. The hypothesis that patrons consistently employed one workshop for these monuments permits a reinterpretation of the reception of the Italian Renaissance style in Spain. The persistence of certain features suggests that Spanish patrons appreciated the Renaissance monuments as a new repertoire of types which were to be repeated. Concludes therefore that the question of the adoption of the Italian style should be framed as the reception of these motifs. ;
