Abstract :
Presents an architectural survey and reassessment of the town-castle. A vast amount of rebuilding, blocking and patching has been carried out since it was first built, probably in the 15th c. It was a prestigious residence and fortified warehouse, with military aspect, with Irish, English and possibly European touches, embellished with gargoyles, fine carvings and plaques and other decorative features. It demonstrates that there was an extremely important lodge of stone masons and sculptors in Galway in the late 15th to 17th cs. The patron of the house was probably Dominick Duff Lynch. ;
