- Abstract :
- Notes that Hardwick's architectural conservativism was the bedrock of a considerable reputation during his own lifetime, particularly in the field of church design. Scrutinizes the architectural histories of five churches he worked on simultaneously during the years 1787-1798: S. Mary's (Wanstead in Essex); S. Paul's, Covent Garden (London); S. James's, Piccadilly (London); S. James's Chapel, Hampstead Road (London); and S. Bartholomew-the-Great (Smithfield). These form a close-knit and coherent group - one which can define Hardwick's early style. ;
