Abstract :
The physical remains of the earliest building yet recorded in Dalston were revealed during excavation. A continuous sequence of occupation in the form of brick buildings dating from the mid to late 16th c. was recorded. Other, later, buildings which appear in the historic and cartographic record were observed. These include a mansion dated to the early 18th c. that had subsequently housed the Infant Orphan Asylum and then the German Hospital. Dwellings which appear on a plan of 1796 were recorded. One building on this plan, identified on site, is thought to have been owned by George II. Gives a brief history of Dalston which may have been settled by 1294, and at least by 1553. ;
