The Prince's accelerated childhood was dominated by the artistry of Van Dyck, who shaped common perceptions of Charles I's era. Assumptions, which influenced royal portraiture then, were not repeated after 1660. Dobson's first flamboyant representation of the Prince during the Civil War was soon moderated. During exile, many artists who painted Charles were of high standing. One image seemed appropriate, the warrior prince, which also appeared in engravings. The Restoration meant sudden cult status for the monarch. His subjects reproduced his picture in the applied arts. They expressed their allegiance by acquiring his portrait and providing public statues. Previous attempts at controlling the reproduction of royal portraits are considered. The bulk of paintings by or after the compositions of the royal painters is weighed, and the case for an approved series of likenesses is argued. The use of portraiture by the Crown is examined. Political and religious attitudes, together with social, literary and artistic conventions, resulted in the adoption of formal, timeless images. The compositions of the Household artists, Cooper, Lely, Wright, Riley and Verrio are discussed, together with those by outsiders, including Kneller. A casual free-market approach prevailed. Repeated copying spread the royal image throughout the land, but created problems of authentication. A journalistic will to document events in visual terms offers a more informal insight into the King's life. There was an increase in civic sculpture of the King, though of variable standards. The better work came from London and the Crown's team of skilled craftsmen. The first free-standing statues of an English king all'antica were instigated, and Gibbons's emergence as a sculptor in the round is coincident with their production.
