Abstract :
Considers a regional sub-class of late Anglo-Saxon strap-end, widespread in East Anglia, the decoration of which is characterised by the use of silver-wire scrolls, either set in niello, or less commonly, enamel. These are best exemplified in several coin hoards dated to the second half of the 9th c. Discussion of this group highlights the potential of evaluating the greatly expanded database of strap-ends since the last study of this common class of ornamental metalwork over 30 years ago. Firstly, they demonstrate the identification of regional groupings in terms of form and style within the national distributions of strap-ends, thereby adding to our knowledge of the provincial organisation of craftwork industries in the period. Secondly, recognition and analysis of their distinctive ornament extends our appreciation of the range of techniques and of decoration at the disposal of the Anglo-Saxon artisan. ;
