Abstract :
Describes and discusses the various archaeological excavations and investigations which have been carried out from 1856 until the most recent development in 1988-1989. Romano-British discoveries were made. The Saxo-Norman features consist of two sunken floored buildings. Medieval features include a number of cellared buildings, stone-lined wells and cesspits. Medieval finds included a small bone or ivory plaque, depicting a winged animal. The identification of this creature is uncertain, it may be a dragon, a griffin or a lion. It is probably European, dating from around the 13th or 14th c. ;
